El Perplexus fue co-inventado por Michael McGinnis (profesor y escultor) y los inventores de juguetes Dan Klitsner y Brian Clemens (Los inventores del Perplexus: más de 30 años para hacer un juguete). Este juguete es distribuido de manera exclusiva por la empresa canadiense PlaSmart Inc desde el año 2009, desde entonces este juego ha ganado numerosos premios a nivel mundial.
